Erasmus Intensive Programme (IP)
“Integrated Multidisciplinary Approach to Flood Risk Analysis”
The IMARA IP is a 2-weeks intensive course focusing on flood risk analysis. The key objective of the IMARA IP is to provide a comprehensive theoretical and practical overview on the up-to-date procedures for flood risk analysis, including environmental and physical data collection and processing, flood modelling, and risk analysis.
The participants of the course are graduate and PhD students from partner universities with different backgrounds and a variety of expertise ranging from geology and geography to environmental and coastal engineering. During the IMARA IP, the participants learn methodologies and practical tools for flood risk analysis in different fluvial and coastal flood prone areas in Europe, as well as two study areas in Italy.
For two weeks selected students have a unique opportunity to join together in a modern campus at the Centre of GeoTechnologies CGT of the University of Siena (Italy) and to study and discuss on topics like e.g.:
The IMARA IP work programme is scheduled as follows: during the first week, activities focus on basic and specific themes for flooding risk assessment. Short theoretical lectures are followed by computer-based exercises which allow students to acquire practical know-how. An in-deep analysis of two case studies data in Italy is performed, then one/two days fieldwork is carried out in order to collect new data from these sites. During the second week, archive information and fieldwork data are processed in order to perform flooding simulations, vulnerability analyses and risk assessments for the study areas. At the end of the IP, students, organised in groups of 3-4 persons, present the results of the implemented tasks.
One main objective achieved by the IMARA IP is the implementation of a multidisciplinary teaching programme where different topics like geographic information systems, remote sensing, DEM analysis, GPS, inundation simulation, vulnerability analysis, risk assessment and mitigation are integrated and applied to real case studies. Such a multi-disciplinary intensive teaching programme with the direct application to real case studies can be regarded as novel within the European framework.
The IP allow also to improve the quality and to increase the volume of student and teaching staff mobility throughout Europe: about 50 students and 10 teachers moved to Italy during the first two editions of the IMARA IP. The practice-oriented programme is developed/supported by scientific-professional hardware, software and equipment in order to obtain digital databases/outputs, i.e. ICT-based content data.
